About Deira Dubai
Explore Dubai’s oldest and seamlessly inhabited district, Deira. Tracing its prominence back to the mid-1700s, it all started when Dubai Creek operated as a vital trading route between the Persia, Arabian Peninsula, East Africa, and India.
By the 1900s, the quarter had fully evolved into the commercial nucleus of Dubai and hosted dhow operators, pearl merchants, and textile traders. All these groups settled along the natural harbor of the creek. By 1963, the district experienced a defining milestone, thanks to the inauguration of the Al Maktoum Bridge.
The bridge functioned as the first permanent crossing over Dubai Creek with a physical link between Bur Dubai and Deira. While it accelerated economic integration, the later urban expansion in Deira during the oil discovery era further reinforced its role as a major logistics and wholesale hub.
In 1970, the district encountered another milestone achievement with the opening of Port Rashid at the gateways of Dubai Creek. Its extensive services and sprawling expanse placed it among the largest ports in the world but by 2008, majority of the shipping operations began to thrive from Port Jebel Ali. These transference of operations ceased Port Rashid’s operations as a prominent shipping hub and reserved it for residential development.
Currently, the district is categorized as a part of Old Dubai along with Satwa, Karama, and Bur Dubai. Its international recognition bolstered with the establishment of traditional marks & souks.

A Complete Guide to Deira Dubai
Deira, the time-honored quarter in Dubai, makes up 20% of the city’s population. With inhabitants exceeding over 400,000, the district ranks among the most heavily populated neighborhoods in the city. It appeals to dwellers as well as visitors looking for cultural immersion, affordability, and practicality of life.
As most buildings in the community are old-aged and lack contemporary luxuriousness, they command lower rental and sales prices compared to new districts. However, residences’ durability keep the demand sustained and occupancy levels high. Its sprawling expansive splinters off the quarter into sub-communities like Al Baraha, Abu Hail, Naif, Al Rigga, Al Muteena, Hor Al Anz, Al Murar, Al Muraqqabat, and Port Saeed.
Naif enjoys the availability of public transport and souks, whereas Abu Hail is recognized for good connectivity and villas. Port Saeed and Rigga Al Buteen, specifically, comprises mixed-use properties and a strong commercial ecosystem. The district’s prominence is consistently accelerating due to its crucial borders by Dubai Creek, Dubai International Airport, Al Mamzar Sharjah, and now Dubai Islands.
